HBO Max is back

On Thursday night, HBO Max confirmed that one of its interns was responsible for a confusing email that was mistakenly sent to subscribers over an hour earlier — and Twitter quickly began empathizing with the intern. (Presley Ann/Getty Images for WarnerMedia)

It’s the name that just couldn’t stick. Now, it’s been changed once again.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced that Max will be reverting to HBO Max. The decision to change was influenced by changing consumers’ needs, the company said, and returning to HBO Max is expected to bring consumers back to the app for what they really want: HBO shows.

If you’re interested in watching “The Last of Us” or “The White Lotus,” a message will pop up when you open the app that reads, “Sam app, new-ish name. The plot twist everyone’s been waiting for. Max is becoming HBO Max. Coming this summer.”

The social media accounts tied to various HBO shows had a field day with the name change, with many praising the move on X.

Other accounts weighed in on the name change, too.

“Me explaining how HBO went from HBO Now to HBO Go to HBO Max to Max then back to HBO Max,” a user on X explained.

“I never stopped calling it HBO Max,” another said.

“When I tell you i’ve been giggling for the last 15 minutes since this HBO Max news dropped,” wrote another.

HBO Max made the change to Max in April of 2023. It was Warner Bros.’ attempt of combining iconic HBO programming, such as “The Sopranos,” with a mix of unscripted TV series in a push to reap more subscribers.

It came a year after the completion of a roughly $43 billion deal that spun off AT&T’s WarnerMedia Division, which included HBO, CNN and TBS, into Discovery, whose stable includes the TLC, HGTV, Magnolia and Food networks.
