Body found after fire erupts in historic downtown Los Angeles hotel

One person was found dead after a fire broke out on the 7th floor of a century-old high-rise apartment building in downtown Los Angeles.

The fire was reported just after 2 a.m. in a corner unit on the 7th floor of the 12-story Rosslyn Hotel located on West 5th and Main streets.

Over 100 firefighters responded to the blaze, extinguishing the fire in just under an hour, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A person was found as firefighters were removing debris to ensure there were no smoldering hot spots. “This is now a fatality fire with a victim located in the fire unit,” the Fire Department said.

No details regarding the identity of the victim were immediately available.

Los Angeles Building and Safety crews were sent to evaluate the building and its ability to occupy residents.

The Rosslyn Hotel, which originally opened as a grand, high-rise hotel in 1914, has been used as an apartment building in more recent years.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
