Dr. Dre cuts ribbon on new Compton High School

Dr. Dre joined school and community leaders to celebrate the opening of a $200 million campus for Compton High School.

The music icon, whose real name is Andre Young, attended and spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday morning to mark the opening of the Andre ‘Dr. Dre’ Young Performing Arts Center.

The Compton native donated $10 million to help fund this new state-of-the-art performing center that now bears his name.

The new performing arts center replaces the previous Compton High School, which was nearly 120 years old. The new 31-acre campus will serve more than 1,800 students and features an Olympic-sized pool, massive gym and cutting-edge technology in classrooms.

Compton Unified School District expects to welcome its first class of students to the campus in August.
