The two people who were killed in a high-speed head-on crash in Santa Ana on Monday were drivers of their respective vehicles, and one of them was behind the wheel of the speeding BMW that caused the collision, police said.
The crash occurred just after 6:30 p.m. on Main Street near Warner Avenue, where southbound traffic spotted a speeding sedan headed north in their lanes of travel.
That BMW sedan hit a black Honda head-on, sending the Honda into a white Toyota SUV.
The drivers of the BMW and the Honda were killed, while five others in the Toyota — including a 1-year-old — were hurt. Neither the baby nor the other four, ages 39, 19, 18 and 11, sustained life-threatening injuries.
A fourth vehicle was also involved, but the driver of that vehicle was not hurt, police said.
The driver of the BMW has been identified as Jorge Andres Delgado, 29, while the Honda driver was Leticia Placencia Alvarado, 32. Both were Santa Ana residents.
“Just given the fact that he was driving at such a high rate of speed for so long, we don’t quite think that it was by accident,” Santa Ana Police Department Officer Natalie Garcia said. “He’s a suspect in this investigation. He’s passed away now, but factors such as alcohol or drugs [remain under investigation].”
