Goldberg Leads in Early Returns to Fill Key Seat on L.A. Board of Education

In a Tuesday special election, former Los Angeles school board member Jackie Goldberg was making a strong bid to return to that role after nearly three decades.

Goldberg, 74, was the leading vote-getter among nine candidates vying to fill a seat left vacant last July, when Ref Rodriguez resigned after pleading guilty to breaking campaign finance laws.

Early returns showed Goldberg with a sizable lead, but not enough to assure an outright win.

To avoid a May runoff, the top finisher would have to claim a majority of the ballots cast, and many votes remain to be counted. The early returns are based on ballots cast before election day.
