You no longer need a car to get to LAX

Friday marks a momentous occasion for travel in Los Angeles County.

This evening, the LAX/Metro Transit Center Station will begin providing the best public transportation access to the airport that Southern Californians have ever had.

For now, the station will connect to the airport through a free shuttle that runs every 10 minutes, but next year, the opening of the Automated People Mover will make transit even easier.

But even ahead of the APM’s opening, the Transit Center Station’s connections to the C and K rail lines, as well as bus routes and airport shuttles, will help close “one of the most egregious gaps in L.A. transit infrastructure,” as until now, getting to LAX via public transit has been extremely difficult.

“The wait is nearly over, Los Angeles,” Metro Board Chair Janice Hahn said earlier this year. “At long last, we are getting a train to LAX. And when the LAX People Mover finally opens, we will truly have an international airport that connects people from inside the terminals to the world beyond through Metro.”

The station’s opening comes ahead of a series of high-profile sporting events that are expected to bring throngs of visitors to Southern California:

Officials have pledged to create a “car-free” Olympics, and the LAX/Metro Transit Center Station is expected to be a key piece of the transit system that will be needed to cut down on cars.

The station is located at 9225 Aviation Blvd.
