Suspect Accused of Killing Man Over $2,000 Necklace After Answering Online Ad

Surveillance video released by the Montebello Police Department allegedly shows the suspect running from the scene of the shooting.

A 25-year-old Montebello man was arrested Tuesday in the shooting death of a man he arranged to meet after answering an ad on an online site similar to Craigslist, police announced Wednesday.

Sean Matthew Garcia had no intention of buying the $2,000 gold necklace that was being offered for sale on OfferUp.com, according to the Montebello Police Department.

When the seller, Brian Lee Gomez, arrived at the prearranged location in the 1600 block of Neil Armstrong Street, Garcia allegedly pulled out a weapon and tried to steal the necklace, police said.

As Gomez tried to run away, he was shot and killed on the sidewalk.

Police believe Garcia may have additional victims.

Anyone with information was urged to contact the Investigation’s Bureau of the Montebello Police Department at 323 887-1313 ext 262.
