The Menendez brothers have been denied in their bid for a new trial.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge William C. Ryan on Monday ruled that evidence that the boys were sexually abused by their father wouldn’t have changed the outcome of their trial, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The decision is the latest in a string of blows for Erik and Lyle Menendez, who killed their parents in 1989.
After Netflix’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” helped bring the controversial case back to prominence, the brothers and their supporters hoped they would be freed.
However, they were denied parole last month, and while former Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón publicly announced that “they have paid their debt to society,” his successor, District Attorney Nathan Hochman, has taken the opposite stance.
“This case, like all cases — especially those that captivate the public — must be viewed with a critical eye. Justice should never be swayed by spectacle,” he said.
Hochman announced he will hold a press conference concerning the ruling at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
