Middle school locked down on reports of possible shooting

A possible shooting was reported at a middle school in the South Park area of South Los Angeles midday Thursday, though no evidence of a shooting has been found so far.

The could-be attack was reported just minutes after noon at 644 56th Street, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

That address corresponds to Los Angeles Academy Middle School.

The investigation is ongoing, and scores of family members could be seen standing outside the school during the lockdown.

In a statement, Principal Ruben Hernandez said thus far, no evidence of a shooting or a firearm has been found, though officials said the school remains on lockdown as of about 1:45 p.m.

“The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff remain my top priority … [O]ur campus remains on lockdown due to a report received from a community member regarding a possible weapon on campus and an alleged shooting,” he said. “The administrative team acted swiftly to address the matter with local law enforcement.

“Please note that we have no reported injuries and no evidence of a shooting. Students and staff remain safe at this time, while law enforcement and region staff continue to respond.

“We are continuing to follow District protocols, and all students and staff are safe. We will provide you with updates as they become available. Thank you.”
