Woman struck and killed while walking in Long Beach

A driver was arrested after police say he struck and killed a woman who was crossing the street in Long Beach.

The suspect was identified as Eric Dewayne Moody, 65, of Los Angeles, according to the Long Beach Police Department. 


On Sept. 12, police responded to a crash near Long Beach Boulevard and 68th Street around 12:15 p.m.

The victim, identified only as a woman, was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a driver in a Chevrolet Camaro. The woman was taken to the hospital where she later died from her injuries.

The driver initially fled the scene, but police said he returned to the area around 40 minutes later.

He was arrested for vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run. He is being held at the Long Beach City Jail on $50,000 bail.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Police said, “At this time, speed, distracted driving and impaired driving do not appear to be factors in the collision.”

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.
