Mom Pleads Not Guilty to Abuse for Leaving 2 Babies in Hot Car

CUDAHY, Calif. (KTLA) — A teenage mother accused of leaving her two children in a hot car pleaded not guilty to two counts of misdemeanor child abuse on Tuesday.

Arely Amaya, 18, was arrested Saturday for allegedly leaving her year-old son and 2-week-old daughter in a locked car while she shopped for a dress at Forever 21.

A passerby saw the children and alerted authorities.

A deputy was able to break into the car and rescue the children, who were “hot and moist to the touch.”

“The window was partially cracked. I stuck my arm in, unlocked the car, and pulled the children out,” Deputy Mejia said.

The children, who were strapped into their car seats, were taken into protective custody.

The temperature inside the car was estimated to be about 110 degrees.

Authorities say the children were in the car for 20 to 25 minutes.

The judge set bail at $50,000.

And ordered Amaya to stay away from her children.

She faces two years in county jail if convicted on both counts.
