Dodgers fans celebrate World Series title with street takeovers, fireworks

Hundreds of thousands of Dodgers fans, some of whom resorted to destructive behavior, crowded the streets of Los Angeles Wednesday night to celebrate the team’s 2024 World Series title.

Sky5 captured footage of fans setting off fireworks, marching through streets and blocking intersections. Buildings across L.A. were illuminated in Dodger Blue, including L.A. City Hall, Pantages Theater, LAX, Crypto.com Arena, the Hollywood sign and more.

In typical street takeover fashion, some intersections became the scene of wild sideshows with drivers doing donuts as crowds danced and cheered them on.

“Tonight, we showed the world that Los Angeles is made of CHAMPIONS,” L.A. Mayor Karen Bass wrote on X. “Congratulations to the Dodgers on tonight’s win. Looking forward to seeing you back in LA!”

The city of Los Angeles was on tactical alert as dispersal orders were issued for areas across the city.

While the celebrations were largely peaceful, there were isolated incidents of destructive behavior.

Crowds were seen breaking windows and looting a sneaker store near Broadway and 6th Street. In Echo Park, revelers tagged an MTA bus with graffiti. Another Metro bus was set on fire.

Police reported projectiles, rocks and bottles being thrown at officers near Olympic Boulevard and Grand Avenue.

Police formed a skirmish line at Olympic Boulevard and Figueroa Street in downtown L.A. after dispersal orders were issued for an unlawful assembly across several busy intersections in L.A. County.

“We know you want to celebrate the Dodgers World Series win, but please do not head to the Downtown LA area,” LAPD said Wednesday night. “There are many streets closed in the Downtown LA area and traffic will be heavily impacted. Please celebrate responsibly.”

Twelve arrests were made in connection with the “at times violent and hostile celebrations” including two for failure to disperse, four for receiving stolen property and six for commercial burglary, the LAPD said Thursday morning.

Mayor Bass continued offering her congratulations to the Dodgers by saying:

“On behalf of our entire city, I want to express our pride and heartfelt congratulations to the Dodgers – to the players and their families, the coaches, the trainers, the front office, and everyone who had a hand in making history tonight. Every night, you exemplified the very best of our city and put greatness on display. The City is coordinating to ensure this Friday is a celebration fit for our championship team and our dedicated fans.”
