A 21-year-old woman was assaulted and left unresponsive in an apartment in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday night.
The attack was reported at about 10:30 p.m. when Los Angeles Fire Department officials responded to a welfare check at WREN Apartments located near Hill Street near Pico Boulevard.
Paramedics found the unresponsive woman inside her first-floor apartment. The woman is reportedly a student at USC, according to the Los Angeles Times.
She was rushed to a local hospital in “serious medical distress,” said LAFD.
At about 1 a.m., hospital staff reported the attack to the Los Angeles Police Department after determining her injuries were due to a physical assault.
Detectives were seen dusting for fingerprints on a glass barrier outside the woman’s apartment.

It’s unclear whether the suspect possibly scaled the glass barrier and landed in the patio area before accessing the woman’s apartment. It’s also unclear whether the patio door was unlocked or whether anything was taken from the woman’s home.
Tenants at the apartment complex were notified of the criminal investigation on Wednesday morning. Some were shaken by the news of the assault and were worried for their safety.
“The reason I chose this apartment is because they have 24/7 security,” said a resident named Yi. “That’s why I don’t consider living on the first floor cause the patio area is maybe not quite safe, you have another door to enter the apartment.”
Police have reminded residents to always keep their doors and windows locked at all times.
On Thursday night, officials confirmed the woman remained hospitalized in critical condition.
