On any given night, some 187,000 people in the state of California are sleeping on the streets - unhoused - that plight, all the worse during the holiday season, when the temperatures drop, and the chasm between the "haves" and "have nots" is more pronounced. However, there are those working to close the gap, including DJ Verrett, founder and executive director the "Urban Community Action Network," or "UCAN," a non-profit that "envisions a community that thrives as a result of empowering the members of the community to thrive as a whole." Verrett joins Courtney Friel and Micah Ohlman to discuss the organization, their efforts to get the unhoused into housing with skills and wraparound services, and how his own 17 year incarceration set him on his path to change the lives of others.
