“Lucy! Where’s my white collarless shirt from Fred Segal?” screamed Alicia Silverstone’s character, Cher Horowitz, in the 1995 classic “Clueless.”
Fred Segal, the Los Angeles fashion staple that made its way into pop culture like the Amy Heckerling coming-of-age film, “Dawson’s Creek” and “Beverly Hills: 90210,” has closed its West Hollywood and Malibu stores—the last of their two clothing locations.
The brand once had nine locations in California.
The COVID-19 pandemic devastated sales and the “cultural touchstone” never recovered.
Founded in 1961, the clothing and accessories brand’s main location was on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood. In the early 2000s, paparazzi could often find A-list celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Nicole Kidman outside its famous storefronts.

“Sixty years the company’s been around and it’s a shame that it’s finally coming to a close,” owner Jeff Lotman told the Los Angeles Times.
The brand’s website has also shut down, but its home furnishing store will remain open in Culver City.
The Segal family’s attorney, Larry Russ, told the Times that they plan on continuing their journey into furniture.
“We are going to be looking for a new operator to open up more stores in the future,” he said.
“Hopefully someone may pick it back up and get it to go,” Russ continued. “It is truly one of the great fashion brands out there.”
