One man was killed and another injured during a shooting Tuesday night at a used car lot in the Glassell Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, police confirmed to KTLA.
Officers responded to a call about the shooting at CarGro used cars in the 2200 block of San Fernando Road at around 5:30 p.m., LAPD said.
Details are limited and it’s unclear exactly how the deadly incident unfolded, but police say both victims, described only as men in their 50s, at least one of whom worked at the dealership, were rushed to nearby trauma centers.
One of the men died at the hospital. The other is expected to recover.
“At least one shooter approached our victims and shot multiple rounds, striking them both,” LAPD Lt. Ryan Babbett said at a press conference held this evening.
According to the homicide detective, there may have been some type of dispute prior to the shooting, but right now it’s unclear if the gunman knew the victims.
“This scene has been locked down and we will process it after we write warrants and really get into the video of what happened,” Babbett added.
Socorro Vela, whose daughter works at the donut shop across the street, rushed to the area after hearing news of the deadly shooting, saying the incident has shaken her up.
“Uncomfortable, scary that we’re not safe anymore,” she said.
Video of the scene captured shortly after the shooting by Sky5 showed a heavy presence of police and firefighters. Medical personnel with the Los Angeles Fire Department were also seen loading the two male victims, both on stretchers, into waiting ambulances.
One of the victims was discovered between two parked cars, with the second found between two buildings within the CarGro used car dealership on San Fernando Road, according to Sky5 reporter Gil Leyvas.
A longtime Glassell Park resident, identified only as Luis, said that in the 45 years he has lived in the neighborhood, he has seen a fair amount of criminal activity.
“We need more police here,” he told KTLA’s Rachel Menitoff.
While authorities said they know the shooting suspect is a male who fled the area in a vehicle, no other description of the suspect or the car was immediately available. Detectives are hoping to learn more about the incident from surveillance cameras at the scene and from surrounding businesses.
