Manchester United’s crucial and much-needed 3–2 win over Burnley on Saturday was a rollercoaster of emotions.
The Red Devils twice surrendered the lead despite dominating proceedings but eventually ran out victorious thanks to Bruno Fernandes’s 97th-minute penalty. Unlike last weekend at Fulham, the Portuguese slotted home his spot kick to spare United’s blushes.
After the midweek defeat to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, defeating newly-promoted Burnley was essential, and the outpouring of emotion from United players at the end of the match suggested as much.
However, it wasn’t all good news for United at Old Trafford. Matheus Cunha, their £62.5 million summer signing, was forced off in the first half due to injury, leaving Ruben Amorim fearing the worst ahead of the September international break.
Here’s the latest injury news regarding the Brazilian forward.
What Injury Does Matheus Cunha Have?

While the exact nature of Cunha’s injury is uncertain, it would appear that the 26-year-old damaged his hamstring during the clash with the Clarets. He was replaced by Joshua Zirkzee after just half-an-hour at Old Trafford and walked straight down the tunnel to receive treatment, with United also forced to withdraw Mason Mount at the break due to a fitness issue.
Speaking after the match, Amorim couldn’t shed much light on injuries to Cunha and Mount admitting: “It was hard to lose Cunha and Mount, because Mount played 30 minutes with an injury. I’m concerned about that, because they are so important for us. We will see.”
He later added: “I don’t know [how they are], I don’t know. We will check them. We need those guys really bad to be really competitive.”
When Will Matheus Cunha Return From Injury?

Until the extent of Cunha’s injury has been revealed, his recovery timeline is unclear. The attacker could be sidelined for days, weeks or months, but medical tests are needed to determine the severity of his issue.
The Brazil national team have confirmed that Cunha’s injury is serious enough for him to have withdrawn from international duty for the upcoming break, meaning he will miss clashes with Chile and Bolivia over the next fortnight.
However, in better news, Manchester Evening News report that Cunha was “spotted leaving Old Trafford walking freely” after the duel with Burnley, perhaps hinting at a less serious issue for the summer recruit.
It remains to be seen whether Cunha will be available upon United’s return to action, with Amorim’s men next taking to the field when they visit local rivals Manchester City in the Premier League on September 14.
