Santa Monica College is closed Tuesday as police investigate an on-campus shooting that left an employee critically wounded.

The shooting occurred at the Center for Media and Design satellite campus on Stewart Street around 9:15 p.m. Monday.

“At this time, we have confirmed that one employee has been shot. Law enforcement is actively searching for a suspect,” the college posted on its website.

The unidentified victim, believed to be a woman, remained hospitalized in unknown condition Tuesday morning.

“The victim of this horrific act of violence is a long-time SMC employee who is currently in critical condition at a local area hospital,” the College stated in an update Tuesday.

“The College is united in sending love and support to the victim’s family, friends, and loved ones. Because this is an ongoing investigation, the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) has requested that the College not disclose the identity of the victim or the suspect,” a portion of the statement read.

No motive for the shooting has been determined and no description of the suspect was available.

Although the suspect was not captured, the Police Department indicated in an update that there was no threat to the community.

“SMPD believes this is an isolated incident and there is no information suggesting the suspect remains in Santa Monica or is a threat to the community,” the Police Department stated.

The Department said it would be providing extra patrols around schools.

All classes and events at the college were canceled Tuesday due to the investigation.

Students were urged to avoid the area and employees were also released from work as the investigation continued.

Investigators asked that any witnesses come forward.
