An investigation is underway after a police shooting left a female suspect dead at a strip mall in Gardena early Tuesday morning.

The gunfire was reported around 1:40 a.m. at the shopping center located at Rosecrans Avenue and Van Ness Avenue.

It was unclear what led up to the shooting but video showed Gardena police at the scene where a white Kia Soul was seen behind yellow caution tape with multiple bullet holes in it.

The body of one person, described by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department as a female suspect, was down on the ground next to the Kia.

It was unclear what prompted the officers to open fire or if the deceased suspect had a gun and also fired.

It was also unclear what the female was suspected of doing prior to her confrontation with police.

There was no word on whether any officers were injured in the incident.
