This story has been updated to reflect new information relayed to KTLA by the Los Angeles Police Department early Sunday afternoon.

A teen inside a Mustang that lost control and crashed into a light pole died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision, which authorities have revealed was caused by high speeds.

A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson told KTLA that the crash, which appeared to have only involved the Mustang, took place at 22nd Street and Harbor Boulevard in San Pedro around 11 p.m. Saturday.

“The vehicle was traveling eastbound on 22nd Street and made a left turn on Harbor when it lost control and hit a pole,” the spokesperson said.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene after authorities responded to the area. The decedent was only listed as a “17-to 18-year-old male.”

Video obtained by KTLA shows the Mustang involved in the collision suffered incredible damage as a result of the collision. A white tent was erected by authorities, indicating a fatality occurred at the crash site.

While no other injuries were initially reported, an LAPD spokesperson told KTLA just after noon Sunday that there were two people inside the Mustang inside at the time of the crash. The passenger was the person who died at the scene, the spokesperson confirmed.

The driver, a juvenile who was also injured in the crash, was later booked for vehicular manslaughter, LAPD said.

No further information was released right away.
