Two people were killed following a stabbing and an officer-involved shooting in North Hollywood Friday night.

Los Angeles police responded to a domestic violence incident involving an assault with a deadly weapon at a home on the 7800 block of Beck Avenue shortly before 1 p.m.

Officers found a woman suffering from multiple stab wounds at the scene. Police ordered the male suspect to drop the knife he was holding and surrender, but he reportedly lunged at officers instead, prompting police to open fire.

Both the victim and the male suspect were transported to local hospitals, where they died from their injuries.

The incident occurred while students and teachers at Arminta Street Elementary School, located across the street from the home, were outside on the playground. The school was placed on lockdown and students and staff ran inside to safety.

Walter Lorente, who has lived in the neighborhood for 25 years, said he was stunned to hear of a deadly incident in an otherwise quiet neighborhood.

“When my wife called me, she was panicking,” he said. “She had heard the gunshots right down the street. She ran out and the kids were all running away, panicking and it was just scary. I told her to lock the gate.”

Lorente said his 7-year-old granddaughter is a student at Arminta Street Elementary and his adult daughter works as a teacher’s aide at the school.

“They were on lockdown,” he said. “They were panicking. They were pretty traumatized because it’s usually quiet around here.”

No further details, including the suspect’s and victim’s identities or how they were known to each other, were released as the case remains under investigation. No officers were injured in the shooting.

Roads in the neighborhood were cordoned off by police tape as authorities remained at the scene Friday night.

Anyone with information on the case or surveillance video of the incident is asked to call the Los Angeles Police Department at 1-877-527-3247.
