A 28-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting of a suspect who is accused of plowing his vehicle into late night revelers outside an East Hollywood nightclub last month.
The alleged gunman, Efrain Villalobos, a resident of Lawndale, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s inmate locator log was arrested Sunday at around 2:15 p.m. by police in Redondo Beach.
Villalobos has been the subject of a manhunt since July 19, the night 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez allegedly drove his car into a large crowd outside a popular nightclub in the 1000 block of North Vermont Avenue, sending 37 people to the hospital.
More than 120 first responders rushed to the scene and treated injuries ranging from minor pains, lacerations to serious fractures and broken bones. Several people who were struck by the car were briefly trapped. There were no fatalities.
After the crash, cell phone video showed bystanders pulling Ramirez out of his vehicle and repeatedly punching and kicking him.
During the altercation, a gunman, Villalobos, allegedly approached from across the street and shot Ramirez in the lower back. He fled the scene before police arrived.
Ramirez was also taken to the hospital and later arrested. On July 22, he was charged by the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office with 37 counts of attempted murder and 37 counts of assault with a deadly weapon. If convicted as charged, he could face multiple sentences of life in prison.
It is not yet clear what charges Villalobos is facing.
