Weeks after Sawtelle residents took to painting their own crosswalks near a busy park, the city of Los Angeles has stepped in to paint the real deal.
On Friday, city workers could be spotted near Stoner Park laying down the classic white stripes of a crosswalk.
Sawtelle resident Jonathan Hale told KTLA last month that the city’s process for creating new crosswalks was too onerous, so he and neighbors hosted painting parties to do it themselves.
“I have to ask the city this and this, and there’s an approval process, and you have to do the budgeting, and then get a list of subcontractors, and then you have to get approval, and there’s the committee… Whatever you know, I just don’t want to deal with all that, so I just decided to do it myself,” Hale said.
A statement from the office of Mayor Karen Bass confirmed the work began Friday morning, and “sidewalk improvements will be installed in the coming weeks.”
“Mayor Bass and Councilwoman Traci Park believe that it should be safe for people to walk, roll, bike and drive in their neighborhoods,” the statement said.
