One person was killed when police responding to a domestic violence call opened fire at an El Monte gas station late Thursday night.

Sky5 was over the Route 66 Gas filling station on Durfee Avenue and Garvey Avenue at 11 p.m. as El Monte police police officers were investigating the incident.

Two police SUVs could be seen surrounding a badly damaged sedan that appeared to have collided with one of them.

The officers were initially responding to a domestic violence report at the gas station, Lt. Gutierrez confirmed to KTLA.

No further details regarding the dispute were immediately available, but at some point, officers opened fire on a man at the location, Gutierrez said.

The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman was transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries. It was unclear how she got hurt, Gutierrez said.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area as a heavy police presence remained at the scene as of 4 a.m.
