A 26-year-old woman is facing a manslaughter charge after another woman was killed in a head-on crash in Mission Viejo in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

The crash occurred at about 1:45 a.m. at Marguerite Parkway and Pueblonuevo Drive, and when deputies arrived, they found that a Chevrolet Malibu and Toyota Camry had collided head-on, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears the Chevrolet Malibu was driving the wrong way in southbound lanes of Marguerite Parkway and collided with the Toyota Camry head-on,” officials said.

The driver of the Camry, only identified as a woman in her 60s, was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver and passenger in the Malibu were injured and hospitalized, and that driver, Geraldine Caicedo-Perez, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter.

Caicedo-Perez did not appear in a search of jail records, but deputies said she was booked into the Orange County Jail. Her bail and next court date were not available.
