Could East Los Angeles become its own city?
That possibility took another step forward this month as the California Senate Appropriations Committee approved Assembly Bill 2986, clearing its path to a vote by the full Legislature.
AB 2986, authored by East L.A. representative Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo, “affirms two L.A. County motions that commit to conducting a feasibility study and providing East L.A. a thorough report of its tax base and county services that return to the region,” LAist reports.
While the prospect of cityhood is appealing to some, others, like L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis, say the county already provides the necessary services to the unincorporated area.
The issue could be moot, however, depending on the results of the feasibility study. In 2012, a similar initiative died when the study “found that the unincorporated area would not be able to financially sustain cityhood,” LAist added.
