Garfield High School in East Los Angeles has been evacuated after law enforcement discovered what appeared to be a cache of fireworks nearby.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said law enforcement agencies other than themselves served a search warrant in the 400 block of Vancouver Avenue, which is located near the school.

Aerial footage from Sky5 showed what appeared to be boxes of fireworks being brought out of a home near the school by bomb technicians, prompting the neighborhood — including the school — to be evacuated.

Officials later said the warrant was a joint operation involving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the Office of the State Fire Marshal and at least one agency from Yolo County.

Representatives for those agencies did not immediately respond to KTLA’s request for more information.

“All students and staff are accounted for and transferred to Griffith Junior High School,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a news alert.

In a series of alerts, leaders of Garfield High School and Griffith STEAM Magnet Middle School clarified that “this situation is not related to immigration enforcement activity.”

They also said students at Monterey Continuation High School joined Garfield students in evacuating to Griffith.
