An investigation is underway after a deputy responding to a San Bernardino County home was involved in a shooting that left a teen hospitalized late Monday night.

The deputies were called to the home in the 10700 block of Central Road in Apple Valley around 10 p.m.

The nature of the call was initially unknown, though a news release Tuesday evening confirmed that the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was responding to a report of an attempted burglary.

After making contact with a person who met the description of the alleged burglar in the home’s driveway, deputies called for those inside to come out.

Three people fled, followed by a fourth person who also met the description of the burglar and who was “later identified as Elijah Brown, who was armed with a large knife,” the SBSD said.

At least one deputy opened fire, and Brown was hit. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening wounds and is in stable condition.

A family member said Brown is 16 years old and was airlifted to the hospital, though the SBSD said he’s 18 years old.

An investigation is underway, and the SBSD noted that “Brown’s involvement is unknown at this time as he has not been interviewed.”
