A fiery crash that left one person dead and another injured has forced an hourslong shutdown on the 5 Freeway through the Griffith Park area of Los Angeles Wednesday morning.

The two-car collision was reported around 3:20 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway near the transition to the 134 Freeway.

A person was left trapped inside one of the cars, which was engulfed in fire, the Los Angeles Fire Department stated in a news alert.

“Sadly, the patient was beyond medical help and determined deceased on scene,” a spokesperson for the Fire Department said.

A patient from the vehicle not involved in the fire was being evaluated, according to the Fire Department.

The crash prompted officials to close all northbound lanes at the 134 Freeway and urge motorists to find an alternative route.

About four hours after the crash, all lanes were cleared and the SigAlert was lifted.
