Fire crews battled a “major emergency’ fireworks-related explosion that ignited a devastating blaze at four homes in Pacoima Thursday night and left at least two people and several pets injured.

Crews responded to reports of the fires in the area of 12933 Corcoran Street just after 9 p.m., a community near the 118 Freeway and 210 Freeway interchange.

Officials said that there were active fireworks explosions that exposed other nearby homes and brush in the area, at one point igniting a vehicle.

A 33-year-old woman who reportedly suffered second- or third-degree burns on her lower extremities was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Another 68-year-old female suffered smoke inhalation injuries but refused transport to the hospital.

One injured dog, according to LAFD, was rushed to an emergency veterinary hospital by the California Highway Patrol, while officials with L.A. Animal Control were called on reports of other injured pets.

The gas company was requested due to a gas leak at one of the homes involved, as well as crews with the L.A. Department of Water and Power to manage downed power lines along the rear of the initial three homes that erupted in flames.

Crews with the L.A. Department of Building Safety reportedly red-tagged two homes, meaning the structures are not safe for anyone to enter. American Red Cross was on the scene to assist residents who lost their homes.

It took more than 130 firefighters just under an hour to gain the upper hand and knock down the blaze. Officials said crews would remain on the scene with LAFD Hazmat and Arson teams, as well as the Los Angeles Police Department’s Bomb Squad.

L.A. Mayor Karen Bass’ Crisis Team was also on their way to the scene, officials said.

“This [fire] follows a home explosion in Simi Valley this morning, handled by Ventura County Fire. If you are storing or considering using fireworks this weekend, we beg you to reconsider and attend a professional show,” officials posted to LAFD Talk’s X account. “The most immediate way to render your fireworks inert is to soak them in water. Please step up and take care of your loved ones, pets, and neighbors.”

The exact cause of the blaze is under investigation.
