Surveillance video captured a mob of teen bicyclists ransacking a gas station convenience store in L.A.’s Lincoln Heights neighborhood.
A group of around 15-20 people targeted a Chevron gas station at 1101 N. Mission Rd. shortly before 6 p.m. on July 31.
Cameras captured the group arriving on bikes at the gas station and quickly rushing into the convenience store. Many of the suspects appeared to be male teens and young adults.
The suspects began ransacking store shelves, many seen grabbing armfuls of snacks, energy drinks and merchandise before running out of the shop.
The store’s owner, Justin Salib, said he was alerted to the thefts by his alarm company and the cashier who was working at the time.
“They just came in like it was Halloween trick or treating,” Salib told KTLA’s Lindsey Pena. “They came in, saw what they wanted and it wasn’t just grabbing one or two items, it was grabbing boxes.”
Lots of merchandise was thrown to the ground and appeared destroyed in the aftermath. No store employees confronted the group and no injuries were reported.
Police were called to the scene, but the group had fled by the time they arrived. Salib claimed authorities told him they couldn’t do much about the situation. He said he’s tired of dealing with what appears to be an ongoing increase in theft and crime.
“When is enough going to be enough?” he asked. “We’re all small business owners. We all pay our taxes, do everything the legal right way and at the end of the day, we get the short end of the stick.”
At this point, Salib said he feels he has no choice but to absorb the loss, paying the cost to replace the stolen inventory and restock his shelves.
“There’s no consequences,” he said. “The crazy part is, these are children, high schoolers and middle schoolers. Where are their parents?”
No suspect descriptions were provided as the case remains under investigation. Anyone with information can call the Los Angeles Police Department at 1-877-527-3247.
