The Hard Summer music festival rocked Los Angeles over the weekend, literally.
Dozens of complaints from residents – primarily in Inglewood and El Segundo – began pouring into local police departments on Friday evening.
Police in El Segundo confirmed shortly before 6:30 p.m. Friday that they were investigating a “loud booming noise” after receiving over 100 calls regarding the disturbance, although in the community alert, the department noted that it was possibly “bass from large speakers near LAX.”
The noise is not believed to have been connected to the music festival, as it didn’t start until Saturday afternoon. No update was provided on the investigation.
It wasn’t just Inglewood and El Segundo that heard the festival over the weekend; one Reddit user said that he lives over eight miles away from the venue, Hollywood Park next to SoFi Stadium, and thought the noise was from his neighbors since his walls were vibrating.
A person responding to the original post, who lives in Marina del Rey, said they had to leave their apartment because they were “starting to lose it,” and another Marina del Rey Redditor claimed that they were able to Shazam a song from their residence ten miles away.
KTLA also received tips from several viewers regarding the noise, with one man saying that the bass from the festival sounded like it was being played directly across from his house. He lives three miles away from Hollywood Park.
“Residents [were] suffering from a loud noise disturbance over a large swath of the city due to the Hard Summer festival…after hundreds of complaints, the music still [continued],” the man said. “It is unfair that a business is violating noise ordinances to make a profit, and it seems Los Angeles residents can do nothing about it.”
Just as the festival was starting, the El Segundo Police Department did put out an alert stating that the festival would be “producing music heard throughout the city” from 2 p.m. to midnight on Saturday and Sunday.
The department also took to X on Saturday evening to say that residents did not need to call 911 to report the noise.
It does not appear that authorities will take any action against the festival for possible noise ordinance violations.
The Hard Summer music festival, which began in 2007, is a Los Angeles-area electronic music festival that draws tens of thousands of attendees, and 2024 was the first year the festival was held at the Hollywood Park grounds.
Some of this year’s performers included Disclosure, Nelly Furtado, Kenny Beats and Major Lazer.
