Papa Cristo’s, a cherished Greek restaurant in Los Angeles, closed its doors on Sunday after 77 years in business. The Pico-Union institution, which has been serving gourmet Greek cuisine since 1948, announced its closure in early April, prompting an outpouring of support from the community.

Customers lined up around the block on Sunday to enjoy their final meals at the restaurant. Chrys Chrys, the owner, expressed pride in the restaurant’s legacy and gratitude for the community’s support.

“I’m very proud that we gave our wonderful effort the whole time, and we’re going to give it to the end,” Chrys told KTLA’s Jennifer McGraw.

Chrys, who is turning 80 in three weeks, said he looks forward to focusing on his family and being the best grandfather he can be.

The restaurant’s spices will continue to be available online.
