Stolen vehicle suspect arrested after high-speed chase, standoff with officers

A suspected car thief was arrested after leading officers on a high-speed chase through Los Angeles and later barricading himself inside a commercial building in Pacoima Tuesday night.

The chase began in the San Fernando Valley before the male suspect in a stolen Ford Explorer SUV exited in the Hollywood Hills and sped through surface streets, at times driving on the wrong side of the road.

He entered the 101 Freeway near Universal Studios and later transitioned onto the 170 and 5 Freeways as California Highway Patrol units took over the pursuit. He exited at Terra Bella Street in Pacoima and continued speeding through surface roads.

Patrol vehicles followed closely behind as he drove recklessly, ignoring street lights and signs while narrowly missing other cars.

At 8:25 p.m. he ditched the SUV in a commercial area near Branford Street and San Fernando Road in Pacoima before running into a warehouse-type building. Officers arrived shortly after and surrounded the entrance. The building did not have a rear exit.

It’s unknown whether the man was armed as he remained barricaded inside the building.

At around 9:30 p.m., a K9 was sent into the property, but came back out moments later. A dozen armed officers entered shortly after to search for the man who was possibly hiding on the building’s second story.

Shortly before 10 p.m., LAPD confirmed the suspect was taken into custody.
