Three-time World Series champion and Los Angeles Dodgers fan favorite Mookie Betts gave back to his adoptive hometown Thursday, handing out gift baskets as part of an annual event in South Los Angeles.
The Thanksgiving Grab and Go! event was held at the Algin Sutton Recreation Center in Vermont Vista with more than 750 families receiving free goodie baskets, holiday toys and gift cards.
Betts was among the volunteers to give out the baskets in a drive-thru style format. Each basket included a free turkey and trimmings for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.
“It’s really neat seeing all the smiles, and whatnot that comes to their faces just from something so little, especially for someone like myself,” Betts said. “Just to take a little time to do something like this means the world to me and my family.”
The event was hosted by the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation, Mookie Betts’ 50/50 Foundation and Brotherhood Crusade.
“As part of the 50 Feeds LA Campaign, the 50/50 Foundation has partnered with the Dodgers Foundation to give $100,000 to support Brotherhood Crusade’s food insecurity efforts, providing 400,000 meals to families in South L.A. this year,” the release stated.
Since 2020, the Los Angeles Fire Department has also partnered with the 50/50 Foundation to provide over $550,000 to the Brotherhood Crusade, specifically focusing on food insecurity efforts in South L.A.
