One police officer was killed and another seriously injured in a shootout in Baldwin Park Saturday night.
The fallen officer has been identified as Samuel Riveros, 35, a nine-year veteran of the Baldwin Park Police Department.
“Just a true Angeleno,” said Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert Lopez. “Our officer was an amazing man who did all he could to protect and serve.”
The deadly encounter began about 7:15 p.m. in a neighborhood on the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue when police responded to reports of a man firing a rifle in the street.
“When officers arrived, they were met by gunfire,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna during a Saturday night press conference.
Surveillance and witness video showed neighbors, many of whom had gathered for weekend parties and get-togethers, scrambling to safety as rapid gunfire echoed through the neighborhood.
Riveros was struck by gunfire and airlifted to USC Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. The second officer, whose name has not been released, was hospitalized in stable condition and is expected to recover.
Officers returned fire during the shootout, hitting the suspect, who was also hospitalized in stable condition. The suspect’s identity has not been released.
Authorities also discovered a second person who was found dead nearby from gunshot wounds. Investigators believe this unidentified person may have been killed by the same suspect.
Video from the scene showed SWAT vehicles and numerous patrol cars converging on the residential block, with officers aiming firearms at a house. Air units circled overhead as the scene unfolded.
Alejandro Ramirez, who lives nearby, said he was stunned when he heard at least 10-20 gunshots being fired.
“I ran inside,” he said. “There were a lot of [shots].”
Another resident, whose car windshield was shattered by the gunfire, said he was shocked when he realized a shootout was happening on his street.
“Our officer was an amazing man,” said Baldwin Park police chief Robert Lopez at a Saturday night press conference. “It’s extremely tragic to have to deal with this. I ask for the community to remember the officers and the deputies who go out there every day, making it safe for all of our families, residents and the community.”
The crime scene remained active Sunday morning.
Assemblywoman Blanca Rubio released Riveros’ name, offering condolences saying, “We thank you for your courage. May you rest easy.”
The shooting remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and no details have been released yet about a possible second suspect.
