Police shot and killed a man who was seen fatally stabbing his mother in an Irvine neighborhood Thursday.
Irvine police responded to reports of an assault at a home near Green Tree Lane and Coral Tree Lane at around 2:50 p.m.
Neighbors called the police after hearing a woman screaming on the quiet residential street. Arriving officers spotted the man actively attacking and stabbing a woman outside their home.
That’s when police opened fire, shooting and killing the adult male suspect. The female victim was also pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the incident was prompted by a domestic dispute, but the moments leading up to the fatal stabbing remain unclear.
“This is definitely very tragic for our community,” said Kyle Oldoerp, an Irvine police spokesperson. “We’re committed to investigating this incident and finding out exactly why this happened.”
Neighbors in the area were shocked at the deadly confrontation in a community that is otherwise safe and filled with older residents.
“What I saw, I just can get it out of my head,” said Marco Rodriguez, a neighbor who witnessed the incident. “I saw two bodies — one on the driveway and one on the sidewalk.”
“A mother and son were struggling and that’s very hard to hear,” said Eftemia Papadopoulos, a neighbor.
Thursday’s officer-involved shooting marks the second deadly incident in Irvine this week after a former caregiver was killed by police for the alleged murder of a paralyzed man.
“This is very unique for our city, to have an officer-involved shooting and to have two so close together,” Oldoerp said.
The victims’ identities for Thursday’s fatal shooting were not released. The knife used in the fatal stabbing was also recovered by officers.
Investigators are searching for video that may have captured the deadly encounter as two separate investigations — one of the stabbing attack and the other of the officer-involved shooting — are underway.
