A Southern California man who had fled the country was arrested and charged with the assault of a federal officer.

The suspect was identified as Elpidio Reyna, 39, of Compton, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

On June 7, Reyna is accused of throwing concrete blocks at officers and law enforcement vehicles as they conducted an immigration enforcement operation on Alondra Boulevard in Paramount.

The thrown objects injured a federal officer and damaged government vehicles as they drove by, authorities said.

Following the incident, Reyna had fled to Mexico. Mexican authorities later located Reyna in the state of Sinaloa.

Following negotiations, Reyna agreed to surrender to the FBI on July 23, officials said.

He was taken into custody at the San Ysidro Port of Entry by FBI and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents and transported to Los Angeles.

U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said one of the officers who arrested Reyna was inside one of the vehicles that were damaged in the attack.

“To anyone who thinks they can attack federal officers and hide behind a mask or helmet, Reyna’s arrest today proves we can find and charge anyone who violates federal law,” Essayli said in an X post.
