A 27-year-old man who opened fire on a Border Patrol Facility earlier this week, injuring three law enforcement personnel, one of whom took a bullet to the knee, was shot and killed during the incident, the Department of Homeland Security announced.
The incident, described by DHS in a news release as a “horrific shooting,” unfolded at around 6 a.m. on July 7 at a USBP facility in McAllen, Texas, a city that borders Mexico.
Ryan Louis Mosqueda, reportedly armed with an assault rifle and a utility vest, opened fire near the entrance to the facility, unloading dozens of rounds at the building and personnel inside before he was “neutralized.”
A photo released by DHS shows at least seven bullet holes in the front door of the facility.
“A McAllen police officer was shot in the leg,” the release stated. “Both a Border Patrol officer and a Border Patrol employee also sustained injuries. All three were taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.”
The 27-year-old, according to reporting from CBS News, has no known criminal record. He was reported missing from an address in Weslaco, Texas, a city about 16 miles west of McAllen, two hours before the violence unfolded.
Additionally, Mosqueda was in a vehicle with Michigan license plates, though he has no known address in the state, with officials saying he was carrying a significant amount of ammunition.
“[The] heinous and unprovoked attack in McAllen could have been a bloodbath if not for the fearless actions of Border Patrol and McAllen law enforcement,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said. “This vile assault on our officers is a disgusting escalation fueled by toxic rhetoric vilifying those who protect our borders. This must end now, and those stoking this violence will face consequences.”
Monday’s incident at the USBP facility comes on the heels of an “organized attack” by at least 10 people at an ICE detention center in Alvarado, Texas, a town less than 30 miles from Fort Worth, that left a local police officer with a gunshot wound to the neck.
