Rafu Shimpo: Chronicling Little Tokyo's Legacy Amidst 'Most Endangered' Designation

Downtown LA's Little Tokyo district is commemorating its 140th anniversary this year. It's the largest and most populous 'Japantown' in the US. In a push to preserve it, Little Tokyo was recently designated as one of America's 'most endangered' historic places. Also endangered is the newspaper that has been covering Little Tokyo since 1903: the Rafu Shimpo. The bilingual publication is steeped in the rich history of the cultural epicenter. Frank Buckley recently met up with its senior editor to take a walk-through Little Tokyo and through the history of the Rafu Shimpo. This segment aired on the KTLA 5 Morning News on May 16, 2024.
